The Dominican tax agency, the Dirección General de Impuestos Internos (DGII), announced that renewal of the Impuesto de Circulación Vehicular, known as the marbete, will begin Thursday, October 29, 2026, and run through Sunday, January 31, 2027. Fees will be RD$2,000 for vehicles made up to and including 2021, and RD$4,000 for those made from 2022 onward.
The new rates were set by Administrative Resolution No. DDG-AR1-2026-00009, dated October 29, 2026. The agency explained that the charge keeps fixed amounts based on the vehicle's year of manufacture, and that this burden is lower than what would result from applying the 1% of vehicle value set out in Article 15 of Law No. 253-12.
According to the DGII, rates had not changed since 2016. Cumulative inflation between September 2016 and September 2026 was 58.1%, which, if applied in full, would have raised payments to RD$2,372 and RD$4,743. For vehicles that stay in the same bracket, the increase is RD$500 and RD$1,000, equal to 33.3% in both cases.
The agency projects that marbete revenue will rise from about RD$3,525 million to RD$4,700 million during the 2026–2027 season, an additional RD$1,175 million. The DGII said the extra income would help strengthen public finances amid international economic and financial uncertainty, and placed the measure within Law 30-26 on Pro-Growth Economic Measures, Fiscal Simplification and Mitigation of the International Crisis.
This season, 2,136,468 vehicles are eligible for renewal. Payment is available at 55 financial institutions with 845 branches, and at DGII collection offices in Villa Vásquez (Montecristi) and Sánchez (Samaná). Renewal is also possible at www.dgii.gov.do and through the DGII Móvil app until Sunday, January 17, 2027. Renewal at authorized points requires a clear, current copy of the vehicle registration. For assistance, the Contact Center can be reached at (809) 689-3444.
Owners who do not renew by January 31, 2027 face a RD$2,000.00 surcharge. Vehicles that did not renew the 2025-2026 marbete face a penalty of RD$2,100.00, which includes RD$100.00 for administrative cessation.
Why it matters
If your vehicle circulates in the Dominican Republic, you will pay more for the marbete this cycle. Renew before January 31, 2027 to avoid surcharges.
